Hammocks - A History of Relaxation

By Danny Burle

The hammock is one of the most popular methods of relaxation. When the word is mentioned, images come to mind of a lazy summer day or simply a time of rest and leisure. Today, consumers are delighted to learn they can find discount hammocks that are more affordable than ever.

Hammocks have endured for centuries and they continue to offer tranquility to consumers across the nation. Hammocks are most often found in gardens or beneath clusters of sheltering trees. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes that are suitable for a wide range of uses, from smaller sizes for individuals, to larger sizes that can easily accommodate a family.

Christopher Columbus is often credited as the first to 'discover' the hammock, but its use reaches far before his time. Most believe the hammock originated around 1000 A.D. The exact details of its invention have been the topic of debate for hundreds of years. Many believe it came from the Mayans, who are known for advanced mathematicians and astronomers, while others theorize it was actually from the natives of Haiti.

The usage of the hammock, however, spread quickly throughout the Americas. Natives of both North and South America found hammocks to adapt to all climates. Migration to follow game and warm weather could quickly be done by simply taking the beds from their supports and moving on. Once a suitable living area was found, they could be reassembled and ready for use just as effortlessly.

Hammocks used by the peoples of these continents were often made of natural fibers. Some utilized animal hides to create their sleeping devices. Hammocks were the perfect beds for outdoor living, as the mesh allowed air to deter humidity and any small animals would simply fall through the gaps between the fibers.

The hammock became a necessity at sea for countless sailors over time. It was quickly utilized by seafarers as more convenient and easier to care for than an actual bed. It was also used by the prison system in Britain for its space-saving abilities and easy storage.

Today, hammocks are more comfortable than ever and utilize the best technology has to offer. They are highly affordable and accessible to most consumers. They are used indoors as well as outdoors since they are portable and can quickly be removed. People from all over the world still sleep in hammocks and many take them on camping trips.

The composition of modern hammocks is mostly canvas. However, in places such as Brazil, traditional woven pieces are still in high demand. Brazilian hammocks are known for their vivid colors and quality, and can make a decorative addition to your home.

There are two classifications for modern hammocks: those made with metal rods and those created without rods. The rods help the fabric spread as you place your weight on it. Hammocks without rods tend to 'hug' the body of the occupant.

Consumers can also enjoy hammocks that have been designed for optimum occupancy. These specialized versions create a center wherever you lie. They are designed to keep the body more stable and secure in the hammock.

There are even hammocks today that are so wide you can lie in them sideways. These pieces can be used as spare sleeping space and will keep your body properly aligned. Hammocks are known to keep your spine straight and distribute your weight evenly. This can remove stress from the 'pressure points' mattresses can create.

Hammocks still carry a sense of magic for today's consumer. They can be both therapeutic and relaxing to anyone who uses them. When purchasing your hammock, the qualities you need to keep in mind are the same today as they've always been. What size do you need? What will you use it for? Finally, you should consider such physical details as what material best suits your needs and what colors will suit your arrangement.

A hammock is a wonderful way to relax without wasting space or time with extended assembly. Their quick use and portability have helped consumers for centuries. If you can receive these beneficial qualities at a discount price, you have nothing but relaxation to look forward to.
