All About Rope Hammocks

By Lindy Smart

Hammocks have been in use for thousands of years and have many uses, although the most popular is lounging in your yard on hot summer days. They are a popular choice for relaxation for many reasons; they can be hung almost anywhere there are a couple trees or poles and provide a very comfortable spot to relax. Rope hammocks have long been the most popular style of hammock because they are inexpensive, lightweight, portable, and durable. If you think about it, who could really turn down a portable spot to relax wherever you go?

Rope hammocks are very comfortable in general, but cotton rope and synthetic rope hammocks can differ in comfort levels. Cotton rope is softer than synthetic rope and is not usually scratchy or itchy even on bare skin. Many people prefer cotton rope hammocks for their comfort although both types will almost always leave a rope indentation on your skin after using it for a prolonged time. Some people dislike the feeling of rope mesh although for the majority of hammock owners it is not a problem. You can use a sheet or blanket on to eliminate the rope prints on your skin although this will stop air form circulating all around your body.

They can be made of a few different materials, usually cotton or synthetic rope. Both types of rope offer a different amount of comfort as well as durability. Ones made of synthetic rope will normally last longer when used outside than a hammock made of cotton rope. Synthetic rope fibers usually do better when exposed to the weather as cotton is prone to degrade over time. Cotton rope hammocks will also last a long time if you do not leave them out in the elements or use them indoors. Whichever material you choose for your hammock, you can expect many relaxing summer days before needing to replace it.

Rope hammocks are popular because they require very little maintenance. It is easy to clean one by submerging and swishing it in soapy water. Some types of hammocks can even be machine washed but you should check the instructions first to make sure this will not damage it. No matter how you clean your rope hammock you should make sure you only use gentle cleansers as harsh ones can damage it and weaken the rope.

Rope hammocks are some of the most affordable hammocks and come in many different styles that will determine their comfort, convenience, and durability. Some of the advantages of this type of hammock are their lightweight nature and their portability. They are great to take camping or on a trip to the beach. You should also consider the size of the hammock you need and look at the hammock's weight limit before you buy it. Many styles will accommodate two people easily, but you should always check to make sure it is safe. A rope hammock will give you many relaxing afternoons in your yard or while on an outdoor trip.
