Choosing a Cotton Hammock

By Lindy Smart

A hammock is a great place to unwind, relax, or catch a nap. Many people have one in their yard that they retreat to. There are many different styles of hammocks and different designs which will have different features and comfort. The most popular types are usually made of cotton and come in either a rope style or a fabric style. Each hammock style has its pros and cons including comfort, durability and price. Cotton is the best material mainly because of its comfort, although it does have its drawbacks as well.

Most people picture a rope hammock when they think of hammocks. This type has the traditional hammock look and is usually made of some type of cotton rope. Cotton rope hammocks are the most comfortable type available and will not scratch or itch like ones made of synthetic materials. Cotton rope hammocks are also very durable and require very little maintenance. They are usually the least expensive type of hammocks as well. They provide ventilation so it is easy to stay cool even on hot and humid summer days and also have the advantage of being lightweight which makes them perfect for travel. They are great to use while at the beach or while camping. They can be hung from many places and some hammocks even come with portable frames to hang them on even if trees or poles are not available.

Cotton rope hammocks are usually comfortable, but like any other mesh designs they can also leave mesh impressions on your skin. This is usually not a problem but can be uncomfortable for some people, especially if the have large uncomfortable knots. Ones with a fine weave and small knots are usually more comfortable than ones with larger holes and large knots that can dig into your back.

Hammocks made of cotton fabric are usually the most comfortable hammocks you can buy. Some cotton fabric hammocks are made of a solid piece of fabric while others are woven and resemble rope designs. They are known for their comfort and durability because ones made of cotton offer the most comfort of any fabric type. Cotton will allow air flow around the user's body better than synthetic materials, although cotton rope hammocks are best for ventilation. Cotton fabric hammocks will not leave mesh prints on your body like rope designs, however. Cotton fabric hammocks are a bit safer than rope hammocks, especially for children, as there is no mesh for fingers and toes to become caught in.

Although cotton fabric hammocks are comfortable, they will mold and mildew more easily than other hammock designs if they are left outdoors, although most of them can be machine washed. Cotton fabric hammocks also do not comfort to the user's body as well as rope ones and are easier to roll off of. They are usually more expensive than cotton rope hammocks but come in a wider variety of colors and styles which are well suited to many different tastes and decor.
