Relaxing Outdoors with Gliders, Swings and RockersBy Jonathan Goodman Outdoor furniture has always been a subject of discussion on the internet. Most people focus on the aesthetic appeal that it provides to your garden while some focus on the utility of the furniture. Hence they look for tables, chairs etc which they can use when they are in the garden. But for me, you can have all the tables and chairs that you want within the home. Why use your patio to line up chairs and tables? Gliders, swings and rockers are a much better option. These are ultimate relaxation devices and are ideal for any garden, lawn, backyard or patio. Think about it, would you want to relax in your garden rocking back and forth with your favorite book in your hand or would you like to sit upright on a chair? I would certainly prefer the later option. When I first got the glider rocking chair into my patio, my wife and kids were slightly speculative about the whole thing. But today, it is the favorite seat in the entire household and I had to replace it with a three seater one. Experimenting The best part is that it can be set up just about anywhere in the garden. You can make it a part of the main patio décor or you can set it up in a remote corner for a small romantic interlude amidst the party. Place it near the flowerbed, near the pool or even under a thick canopy of trees. The outdoor glider will fit perfectly, just about anywhere. They are crafted from the best quality wood and are available in hundreds of designs. The classic Adirondack being one of the most widely used designs in the world. However, quality wooden gliders or swings can be a bit expensive and this is what sets most people back. They feel that such an expense is not justified in the garden. However, you can very well choose hammock swings which are much lesser expensive and are equally efficient. Traditionally hammock swings are made of rope and are ideal for a bit of stargazing in the garden. I had my own hammock swing when I was a child and I loved lying on it swinging back and forth. Nowadays, you have hammock swings that are made of wood as well as vinyl. There are several designs like a Brazilian hammock, Mayan hammock and a Pawley island hammock that you can choose from. Protecting your furniture While you can have the best of porch swings or garden swings in your porch, it is worth nothing at all if you cannot care for it and protect it. I have seen patio furniture that has lasted for decades with proper care. There is no reason why yours cannot last as long. The first step in caring for the furniture is gaining an in depth understanding of the parts involved. For example, a swing will have a set of bolts, screws and a chain all of which can get loose and rusted. So once in a year, make sure that you check all the mechanics and get it oiled. Now if you have a rocker recliner or a rocker chair, then it can easily get cracked or splinted over a period of time. Color fading is another problem that is commonly associated with wooden outdoor furniture. Check them periodically to ensure that the damage does not get out of hands and use techniques like cleaning, sanding and chemical coating to protect the wooden furniture. A polyurethane varnish coat is recommended annually. If the sun is too harsh, then look for a varnish with UV protection. Make furniture care a habit and your furniture will last for years.
